EU law and competence to tackle antimicrobial resistance: What can the EU do?

This legal briefing reflects on the European Union (EU) competences to take action for health, and especially reviews some of the competences which could be invoked to adopt EU-wide legally binding measures to combat AMR.

 

In light of the looming health crisis caused by the global spread of multi-drug resistant bacteria, Europe’s actions to avert a “post-antibiotic era” will be decisive. A legal briefing “EU law and competence to tackle antimicrobial resistance” by Professor Amandine Garde of the University of Liverpool School of Law examines the legal framework and identifies several options to tackle AMR in the follow-up EU Action Plan to be published in 2017.
