28 April marks the World Day for Safety and Health. This year the focus is on the prevention of occupational diseases.
According to the International Labour Organization (ILO) more than 2 million deaths are caused by various types of work-related diseases. It corresponds to a daily average of more than 5,500 deaths. Worldwide, occupational diseases continue to be the leading cause of work-related deaths.

EPHA’s planned contribution to the commission’s public consultation on the urban dimension of the EU Transport Policy
The European Commission launched a public consultation on the urban dimension of the EU transport policy. According to new figures published by the European Commission, progress in lowering road fatalities slowed significantly during 2011 (only 2%) in a stark comparison to an average EU-reduction of 6% in the last decade. Against this background, while some EU Member States (MS) known for strong safety records like Germany and Sweden, now show a significant increase in deaths, other MS already lagging behind in road safety like Poland and Belgium see the number of deaths going up.

This June 12 the European Child Safety Alliance of EuroSafe will launch its Child Safety Report Cards for more than 30 European countries in an event that will take place at the Strasbourg seat of the European Parliament. This initiative counts with the support of John Dalli, the EU Commissioner for Health and Consumer Policy; and the British Member of the European Parliament Malcolm Harbour, Chair of the Internal Market and Consumer Protection Committee.

The Council of Europe adopted a new 2012-2015 Strategy for the Rights of the Child. The strategy aims to provide guidance and support to actors in the field on how to make the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child a day-to-day reality for children in the 47 Member States of the Council of Europe.
