EPHA Working Group on Tobacco policy - March 2013

The EPHA Working Group on Tobacco met on 19 March 2013 to discuss EPHA’s position on the Revised Tobacco Products Directive. On March 19 2013, the Secretariat met with its members to discuss EPHA’s position on the Revised Tobacco Products Directive and the future advocacy strategy to adopt in the coming months. Brussels, 13 March – The European Public Health & Agriculture Consortium (EPHAC) is disappointed by the European Parliament’s approval of coupling subsidies to tobacco production. Tobacco should not have a place in the 2014-2020 EU Common Agricultural Policy (CAP). Protection from second hand smoke improved, but still too high

A report by the European Commission confirms that the exposure to second hand smoke has decreased considerably since 2009, although the differences among countries are still important. In 2009 the European Commission adopted the Council Recommendation on Smoke-Free Environments, which called on Member States to "adopt and implement laws to fully protect their citizens from exposure to tobacco smoke in enclosed public places, workplaces and public transport" no later than November 2012. (...)

On 22 January, in Brussels, tobacconists and newsagents demonstrated to express their opposition to the draft Tobacco Products Directive (TPD). After weeks of intense debates, pressure from the public health community and the resignation of the Health Commissioner, the European Commission has adopted its proposal to revise the Tobacco Product Directive.
