Dr Alessandro Gallina

Policy Manager

Alessandro is focused on promoting effective and equitable policies to tackle non-communicable diseases (NCDs) through a science-based approach. Motivated to make a meaningful impact on well-being and reduce health inequalities, Alessandro is working to improve the health of his fellow European citizens.

He is originally from Italy, but to pursue his career goals he has moved several times within Europe during the past 10 years. With a background in biology and a doctorate in medical science from the Karolinska Institute in Sweden, Alessandro has devoted his time in academia to understanding NCDs, their causes and treatments, as underlined by his published articles.

As a firm believer in the axiom that prevention is key, Alessandro moved to the public health sector and joined the Directorate General for Health (DG SANTE) of the European Commission in Luxembourg. At the DG SANTE he worked mainly on the implementation of the European Reference Networks for rare and complex diseases while deepening his knowledge in global health through a master class at Lund University in Sweden. Through these experiences, Alessandro gained valuable exposure to diverse needs, priorities, and perspectives in policymaking, research, and financing at national, European, and global levels.
