EPHA briefing on eHealth

EPHA has updated its briefing on eHealth by introducing a number of new paragraphs. The structure of the briefing has remained unchanged and members can find information on the potential benefits and challenges of eHealth, relevant EU processes on eHealth, stakeholder participation, as well as the contact details of people working in the EU institutions.

The original briefing on eHealth (see here for more information) was released in 2010. Since then, EPHA has been actively following relevant eHealth developments and attended a string of events on the issue. Moreover, EPHA has produced its position on the eHealth Action Plan 2012-2020 , as well as its briefing on the Digital Agenda for Europe, in which eHealth also plays a significant role.

This revised eHealth briefing includes a number of reworked and expanded sections, including new paragraphs on health literacy and digital literacy, on online safety, and on the needs of health professionals.

The update also makes reference to many relevant developments that have occurred over the last year, including the launch of the European Innovation Partnership on Healthy and Active Ageing, the eHealth Task Force, and the most recent eHealth week.

Overall, EPHA remains optimistic about the many opportunities that new technology can afford to both individuals and health systems – especially in these economically difficult times – however it underlines that technology must always be user-friendly in order to really make a positive contribution and empower patients and health professionals. Moreover, eHealth must primarily be seen as complementary channel and should never serve to replace the vital face-to-face relationship between patients and practitioners (with the exception of situations where this may not be possible, e.g. in remote areas or where telemonitoring may be advantageous for other reasons).
