The European Parliament’s ENVI Committee voted on Tuesday 6 November to adopt an own initiative report on the microbial challenge.
The draft report was written by Anna Rosbach MEP (ECR, Denmark) and received recommendations last month in an opinion from the Agriculture Committee. Adopted by 62 votes to 0, the final draft of the ENVI report makes amendments in several areas including:
- An emphasis on the ‘One Health’ principle of treating health as part of a larger system involving humans, animals and the environment.
- Stronger provisions for reducing prophylactic use of antibiotics in animal husbandry.
- Additional provisions on animal welfare and farming practices.
- Greater emphasis on the importance of ensuring antibiotics are only available to patients who have a prescription for them.
- New provisions on infection control.
- Further highlighting of the need for sound information across member states.
- Clear statements on the need for a change in attitudes, practice and education of patients, health professionals and veterinarians, as well as more information in schools.
The report will now be presented at the plenary session, currently scheduled for 10 December 2012.
