Prioritising Health in Europe’s Mobility Planning:

Transformative Pathways Beyond 2024

30 May 2024

09:15 - 13:15 CEST

Comet Louise & Online

Pl. Stéphanie 20, 1050 Ixelles, Belgium

Today, road transport is the only sector where emissions have consistently risen in recent years. The links between transport and health and wider co-benefits have long been recognised in European partnerships and European policies, more recently in the Budapest Declaration adopted by countries of the WHO European Region. This included a commitment to promote healthy, safe, climate-friendly and inclusive mobility and transport for all. How can we now leverage these favourable conditions to achieve transformative change across Europe via local clean transport solutions that promote health, safety and climate-friendliness?

EPHA is pleased to invite you to an informative event to explore the critical interlinkages between clean mobility policies and health outcomes, as crucial for transformative change from city to European level beyond 2024. Join us to explore why and how to prioritise health in mobility planning for sustainable, affordable, accessible, and healthy transport solutions for all. The event will be followed by a light networking lunch.

Programme

08:45 – 09:15 | Registration & Coffee
09:15 – 09:20 | Opening Remarks – Moderator

09:20 – 09:30 | Opening Keynote: Setting the Scene
  • Francesca Racioppi | Head of Office, WHO European Centre for Environment and Health
09:30 – 10:30 | Making THE (Transport, Health and Environment) Links

This session will explore the critical intersection of public health with mobility and urban planning and how these have been integrated within health and environmental policies to date. We will explore how this growing momentum can be leveraged, in recognition that the mere presence of health concepts in mobility policies and plans does not guarantee effective improvement in health outcomes.

  • Dr. Audrey de Nazelle | Senior Lecturer at the Centre of Environmental Policy, co-chair of International Society for Environmental Epidemiology (ISEE) Policy Committee and outgoing chair and founder of Imperial’s Network of Excellence on Air Quality (NExAir)
  • Pierre Dornier | Founder and Director, Les chercheurs d’air
10:30 – 10:45 | Bridie Collin’s story on the impact of traffic noise on public health
10:45 – 11:00 | Coffee Break
11:00 – 12:00 | Health-Driven Mobility: Bridging this nexus from Cities to the EU level

The critical nexus between health-driven mobility is now clear; but how do we ensure that city and EU-level strategies do not fall short and perpetuate current problems of social inequality, harm to health, severance and economic inefficiency? This session will provide insights into challenges, enabling factors and actionable pathways to integrate public health into mobility planning and policies from the European to the local level.
