How to tackle obesity by local actions?

Tackling overweight and obesity requires actions at several levels, including at local level. The National Heart Forum (NHF), an EPHA member, and the Faculty of Public Health published a new toolkit with useful statistics, practical initiatives, evidence of effectiveness, checklists, frameworks and examples of good practice.

Lightening the load: Tackling overweight and obesity” has been designed to provide a starting point for developing a local strategy to combat overweight and obesity in England and other parts of the UK.

Building on the success of the previously published toolbox for local partnership action, the report incorporates the latest guidance from the National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE).

Specifically targeting local actors, the toolkit includes practical tips to help them define the most accurate strategies to combat overweight and obesity, by taking into account the specific needs of local population as well as the socioeconomic and psychological experiences they may face. It is also a gateway to further information on the subject.

The toolkit comprises four sections:
– The main health problems associated with overweight and obesity.
– Ways of reducing the burden of overweight and obesity through prevention and management.
– Practical guide to developing a local strategy to prevent and manage overweight and obesity.
– Links to more information.
