Europe is reorienting its security paradigms in response to the Ukraine crisis. Governments now urgently need instruments to create a new paradigm for food security and nutrition. In this newsletter, we zoom-in on public procurement as one such instrument.
We feature a guest contribution by the UN Food and Agricultural Organisation (FAO) on public procurement’s game-changing potential for food systems transformation and healthy diets. The freshly launched civil society Buy Better Food campaign shares its plans and an invitation to join the movement. You can also relive EPHA’s event of last week that discussed the ins-and-outs of rolling out better school meals and canteens for all children in Europe.
To create a new paradigm, one needs both instruments and vision. Unfortunately, the prevailing vision of food security remains too narrow, with all the policy risks this entails. This newsletter features a strong argument for a planetary health angle to food systems transition and the important role the medical community can play in that. We are also reminded that a move to sustainable food systems cannot turn a blind eye on regulating alcohol.
